Reports this week emerged that Liverpool is keen on Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven,
This isn’t the first time Liverpool have circled Van de Ven. In the summer of 2023, when the defender was still at Wolfsburg, the Reds showed interest.
Former Liverpool sporting director Jörg Schmadtke had originally brought Van de Ven to Wolfsburg in 2021 for just €3.5 million, but Liverpool ultimately didn’t pursue the transfer aggressively enough. Tottenham seized the initiative, paying an initial £34.5 million (potentially rising to £43 million) to secure his signature, and he was named Spurs’ player of the year in his debut season.
That missed opportunity now looks costly, with Tottenham valuing their star defender at more than double his original price. Van de Ven has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s most impressive centre-backs, making 80 appearances across all competitions for Spurs.
Manager Thomas Frank has asserted that the Dutchman is a player Spurs should “prioritise”:
“He’s definitely a player we should prioritise,’ said Frank on Van de Ven. “Definitely, for me, Micky is a key player for this team and this club and hopefully for many years to come.”
“He has what it takes to be an even better player and I’ve no doubt he can help us to get us to where we want to be in the future.”
“I just saw him, and he seemed very happy, smiling,’ said Frank on Thursday when asked if Van de Ven was still happy at Spurs. ‘He was happy after the game that we won when he was in the changing room after the game.”
When quizzed on whether the 23-year-old was “off limits and not for sale at any price”, the Danish manager kept his cards close to his chest:
“I would say he’s very important for us. Micky is a top-notch player now and for the future.”
