Jonathan Kuminga #1 of the Golden State Warriors is defended by Moussa Cisse #30 and Brandon Williams #10 of the Dallas Mavericks during the first quarter at American Airlines Center on January 22, 2026 in Dallas, Texas.
It appears that Jonathan Kuminga has avoided a severe injury after twisting his ankle and hyperextending his knee on Thursday night in the Golden State Warriors‘ 123-115 loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported that initial tests on Kuminga’s ankle and knee confirmed that “neither issue is believed to be serious,” per a source close to the team.
Furthermore, Kuminga told ESPN that he would wait until Friday morning before deciding whether to get an MRI to confirm the severity of the injury.
“Kuminga, who limped out of the locker room postgame, told ESPN the knee was bothering him more and that he would wait to see how it felt Friday morning before deciding whether to get an MRI,” Slater wrote.
Jonathan Kuminga Injury Update
Kuminga scored 10 points in just nine minutes off the bench before landing awkwardly while driving to the basket at the 4:29 mark of the second quarter. Fouled on the play, he made both his free throws before leaving the court at the 3:52 mark. Per beat writers covering the Warriors, Kuminga tried his best to stay on the court but eventually asked to head to the locker room to receive treatment.
After the game, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr called Kuminga’s injury “a shame” since the Congolese forward was just in his second game back in the rotation after being DNP’ed for nearly a month.
“I just talked to him,” Kerr said of Kuminga, via The Athletic’s Nick Friedell.
“He said he’s going to get an MRI (Friday). It was both the knee and the ankle. We’ll see how bad it is. It’s such a shame. He was playing great, and that definitely hurt as well — not having him available for the second half.”
Stephen Curry Praises Kuminga
Stephen Curry, who had 38 points in the loss to the Mavericks, praised Kuminga for “staying ready” throughout his time outside the Warriors rotation, while sympathizing with the young player for sustainining an untimely injury.
“It’s just a tribute to him just staying ready,” Curry said of Kuminga, via The Athletic.
“I know it’s been a while since he played, but the work that he was putting in and understanding how things have drastically changed from one game to the next. He looked good. He looked like he was comfortable out there. Hopefully, he’s not out too long and can pick up where he left off.”
The Warriors may have to wait for a Jonathan Kuminga injury update on Friday to determine how long the 23-year-old could be sidelined. The injury comes just a few weeks before the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline, amid widespread reports of the Warriors trying to move Kuminga. Teams such as the Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings have reportedly been most aggressive in pursuing a trade for the athletic wing.
The Warriors (25-21) will continue their four-game road trip against the Minnesota Timberwolves (27-18) Saturday in a matinee game airing on ABC. The teams will face off again on Monday night. The pair of games could be key to determining the standings at the end of the season in a tightly-contested Western Conference.
