Tottenham in advanced talks to sign Liverpool defender

Target: Andy Robertson

Tottenham Hotspurs Football Newsletter

Tottenham are in talks to sign Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson as they close in on their third signing of the January transfer window.

The Scotland international, who is out of contract in the summer, is keen to play more minutes ahead of this summer’s World Cup, and Standard Sport understands that talks between the two clubs are advancing.

Spurs were among the clubs eyeing up a move for Robertson in the summer, when he would become a free agent, but they have decided to accelerate their interest to provide an immediate boost to Thomas Frank’s squad after Ben Davies suffered a fractured ankle against West Ham last weekend.

Robertson, who has started just four Premier League games this season, has struggled for game time since the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth in the summer.

Spurs, meanwhile, are in the market for cover at left-back despite announcing the £13million arrival of 19-year-old Brazilian left-back Souza from Santos on Thursday.

With Davies unlikely to play again this season after undergoing ankle surgery, Robertson would provide immediate cover for the Welshman, while also adding Premier League experience and leadership.

The 31-year-old will compete with Destiny Udogie for first-team starts, allowing Djed Spence more minutes at his preferred right-back slot.

Robertson would also count as a homegrown player in the Champions League knockout stage for Spurs, who have struggled to meet UEFA squad rule guidelines this season.

With injuries piling up, Spurs have been busy in the January window, bringing in Souza and former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid.

Souza will be eligible to make his debut this weekend against Burnley this weekend should he receive international clearance in time.
