Liverpool have already been tracking their ideal new left-back after Andy Robertson leaves - opinion

It has now emerged that Andy Robertson is in talks to leave Liverpool for Tottenham Hotspur.

Robertson has been a key player at Anfield since his move from Hull City in 2017.

However, the Scotsman has fallen out of favour in the last few months due to the arrival and upturn in form of Milos Kerkez.

Robertson is now in the final six months of his deal at Liverpool, but doesn’t look set to see out his contract.

In some rather shocking news, it emerged that Tottenham are in advanced talks to sign the defender.

Is Liverpool letting Andy Robertson join Tottenham a mistake? Who could replace the left-back?

Liverpool have no quality backup for Andy Robertson

If the 31-year-old does move to Spurs, which is now looking likely, Kerkez will be the only senior left-back at the club.

Kostas Tsimikas may be recalled from his loan spell with AS Roma, which has seen the Greek defender struggle for consistent minutes.

But there is a reason Liverpool allowed Tsimikas to depart in the first place. In turn, rather than having to try and rely on Kerkez to be covered by an academy player or a fringe star who wasn’t good enough to play regularly last term, it would make sense for a new player to be signed this month.

On that front, there seems to be an obvious option who could be targeted.

Liverpool already tracked David Raum

Before the addition of Kerkez, Liverpool were tracking three left-backs in late 2024 as long-term replacements for Robertson

As per Sky Sports, they were Antonee Robinson, David Raum and Leif Davis.

Of that trio, Robinson has the most Premier League experience, but Raum seems to be the best choice.

Currently on the books of RB Leipzig, the German is a very attack-minded left-back who has played over 100 games as a wing-back for club and country.

Liverpool rely heavily on their full-backs to create chances, and the 27-year-old has a knack for doing so, providing a career total of 81 assists as well as scoring 41 goals.

Not only is Raum positive in the final third, but he has also shown great leadership during his time with Leipzig, being made their new captain at the start of 2025/26.

With Robertson leaving, the core leadership group at Liverpool, which only really consists of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and perhaps Mohamed Salah, has decreased in the last few years.

So it would make sense for the Reds to target another player who, like Robertson, will stand up and make himself heard when needed.
