Holocaust Memorial Day exhibition to take place at Stamford Bridge

This Tuesday, 27 January, Holocaust Memorial Day will be marked internationally and at Chelsea Football Club, we will be hosting an exhibition titled Sport Against Racism: How sport has contributed to the fight against racism.

The range of displays, which will be open to all visitors to the stadium between 10am and 2pm that day, highlight the achievements, struggles and resilience of athletes before, during and after the Holocaust.

Those who visit will learn of the role sport played in fighting the Holocaust, namely Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the Aston Villa tour of Germany two years later.

There will also be exhibits that tell the stories of Jewish athletes persecuted under Nazi rule and the remarkable post-Holocaust resurgence of Jewish sports figures, including Bela Guttmann and the rise of Benfica, and Mark Spitz, one of the most decorated Olympic swimmers of all time.

Also discussed is how sport can be a force for good, fighting antisemitism and racism, with a focus on the famous Black Power salute at the 1968 Olympics, the organisation Kick It Out’s work in football, and Azeem Rafqiq’s story of fighting racism in cricket.

The exhibition is produced by Yad Vashem in conjunction with the Jewish Ethics Project and has been made available to the club through our [Jewish Supporters’ Group](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/jewish-supporters-group).

Anyone wishing to attend should visit the Tea Bar at Stamford Bridge from 10am – 2pm on Tuesday. It is free to attend, with no registration required.
