Andy Robertson has already sent a clear message to Thomas Frank - as Tottenham hold talks with Liverpool over a January transfer. The 31-year-old was believed to be a summer target for Spurs upon the expected expiration of his contract, but plans have been brought forward a few months following the injury to Ben Davies.

Milos Kerkez's arrival at Anfield has seen Robertson's minutes diminish with the Scotland international - as revealed in a recent interview - considering his options but fully aware of what he wants from his next move.

He told BBC Sport earlier this month: "Yes [I would like to stay at Liverpool], but it's a difficult question.

"I've got five months left and we need to see what the option is to stay - or if there's options to go and things like that. I need to sit down with my family and decide. After a stressful summer, I'm just trying to enjoy being a part of it and being a Liverpool player.

"I wanted to qualify for the World Cup and, thankfully, we've managed to do that. I need to see what myself and my family wants going forward."

Robertson joined Liverpool in the summer of 2017 from Hull City, for just £8milllion, and he has certainly paid that back with two Premier League titles and one Champions League trophy as his notable achievements.

However, he has become the back-up to Kerkez over these last few weeks with the Hungary international looking much better recently, after a difficult start to his career in Merseyside. That has resulted in Robertson appearing for 181 minutes since mid-December and he went on to make a clear admission over his game time aspirations.

"I can focus on the last eight and a half years," Robertson replied when asked if minutes over the coming months will help to decide his future. "I think Jurgen Klopp left me out for one game and I was raging. So I'm a player who wants to play.

"I've played through injuries. I've played when I'm not 100 per cent fit. I've played when I've only been 50/40/30 per cent fit for this club and for my country. I always want to be on the grass and playing and obviously now that's not happening, so that's what is different.

"I have a different role here this season, which I'm getting enjoyment out of but, at the end of the day, footballers want to play and if anyone is sat happy on the bench, then they don't belong at any football club.

"That's always my argument, you should always want to push to be in the team. If you're happy to sit on the bench, then I don't think you have the right attitude.

"I think I've played well in the games I've played this season. Maybe I've not played as much as I would have liked, but it's nothing I've been surprised by. Let's see what happens."

It certainly looks as though a move to Spurs this month is what will happen despite the Lilywhites confirming the arrival of Brazilian left-back Souza earlier this week.

Destiny Udogie, despite only just returning from an injury, is likely to be Frank's favoured option for that role, but Robertson will more than likely play for the remainder of the season.
