Liverpool supporters are attempting to get their heads around Friday’s bombshell news that Andy Robertson is set to depart for Tottenham Hotspur.
Fans had just about made peace with the fact that it would be a quiet end to the January transfer window, but are now having to reassess.
If Robertson goes – as appears to be expected – then Liverpool badly need to find a replacement.

Milos Kerkez will be left as the only senior left-back at the club, meaning Kostas Tsimikas could return from his loan spell at Roma.
The Greek has not been a regular starter under Gian Piero Gasperini, and in the event that Robertson is sold it would make sense that he came back to Liverpool. With things potentially moving quickly, journalist David Lynch has shared whether a cancellation of Tsimikas‘ loan is even possible.
Roma likely to let Kostas Tsimikas return
It had always felt possible that Liverpool’s plan had been to let Robertson leave and bring Tsimikas back in 2026, but it could easily have waited until the summer.
Now that things have been brought forward, though, some Reds fans will be panicking that they are going to be left even more short in defence.

According to Lynch, however, Roma are likely to agree to cutting Tsimikas’ loan deal short this month.
“On the Andy Robertson situation: Any potential return for Kostas Tsimikas would need to be mutually agreed with AS Roma, but he has managed just 380 Serie A minutes so far,” the reporter said on X.
“On the surface, it doesn’t seem like they would be too reluctant to let him go.”

Is there another option for Liverpool?
Although Tsimikas was a popular member of the Liverpool squad during his five years in the first-team, there will be plenty of supporters feeling nervous over this move.
The Greek was never on Robertson’s level, and although he will be once again returning as a back-up player, the swap would arguably make the Reds weaker.
Unfortunately, those looking for a different option are likely to find themselves disappointed.
The Reds let academy player Luke Chambers go to Charlton earlier this week, taking away another option, while it seems desperately unlikely that they’d go into the January market for a back-up left-back.
If Roma surprise everyone and block a way out for Tsimikas, the result would surely mean Robertson staying rather than a different route being explored. You could forgive Liverpool supporters for hoping the Romans say no.
