Andy Robertson has already hinted this month that an exit from Liverpool could be on the cards, with the left-back now in talks over a shock move to Tottenham.

Negotiations are thought to be progressing between all parties over a switch to north London for the Scotland international. Spurs have brought forward plans to sign Robertson in the summer, when he would be available as a free agent upon the expiry of his contract at Anfield.

Robertson was the subject of transfer speculation last summer, with Atletico Madrid having been strongly linked with a move before the Spanish club moved on to other targets.

The 31-year-old was handed the vice-captaincy at Liverpool in pre-season, although he has slipped down the pecking order following the arrival of Milos Kerkez.

With the Hungarian beginning to settle into being first-choice now, Robertson looks to have firmly become the backup option, which has fuelled talk of him moving on soon.

And when asked earlier this month about his future, Robertson didn’t rule out the possibility of an early exit.

"We’ll see what happens," Robertson said. "We’ve had chats now which will remain private. I've spoken to them and we’ll see what happens."

Asked if he would like to stay, Robertson added: "It’s a difficult question to answer. I’ve got five months left and we need to see the option to stay or if there’s options to go and things like that. I’ll sit down with my family and decide.

"After a stressful summer, I’m just trying to enjoy being a part of it and being a Liverpool player. I wanted to qualify for the World Cup and thankfully we’ve managed to do that. I need to see what myself and my family want moving forward."

Although he has held down a regular spot in Liverpool’s side since his move from Hull City in 2017, Robertson has found his opportunities harder to come by this season, having made just 11 starts.

"I always want to be on the grass and playing and obviously now that’s not happening, so that’s what is different,” he admitted. “I do have a different role here this season, which I’m getting enjoyment out of, but at the end of the day, footballers want to play.

"If anyone is happy sat on the bench, then they don’t belong at any football club. That’s always my argument: you should always want to push to be in the team.

"If you’re happy to be sat on the bench, then I don’t think you have the right attitude.
