Chelsea hit with new Palmer injury blow as Rosenior issues update

Sidelined: Cole Palmer

The Blues talisman missed Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Pafos in the Champions League due to a minor thigh strain, and will again sit out this weekend.

Palmer’s start in last weekend’s 2-0 win over Brentford was just his fourth full 90 minutes of a season disrupted by injury and predominantly a recurring groin issue.

After Wednesday’s match, Rosenior described Palmer’s absence as “precautionary”, adding: “He felt something really, really minor in the game against Brentford.

“It was actually quite early in the game, so credit to him to keep going through it. But I don’t want to risk any players at this stage, especially players of Cole’s quality.

“He has got a really good chance to be involved and start the game on Sunday. We will keep preparing him for that.”

However, Rosenior’s latest update was less positive. He told reporters: “Cole is in a good place. He joined training today which is really positive.

“We'll assess his reaction to training. He won't be available for Palace but could be potentially for Napoli.”

Estevao and Jamie Gittens were able to come off the bench on Wednesday night following illness, and Rosenior hopes the squad are now over the worst after a flu affected both players are staff.

He added: “In terms of sickness, the players are coming back gradually to full health. Estevao was very ill. Jamie Gittens was very ill. That altered our plans over the weekend.”
