Steven Gerrard is set for an Anfield return this spring – but not in the dugout just yet.
The Liverpool legend has been keeping himself busy as a TNT Sports pundit since leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq last year, and he has had plenty to say about Arne Slot’s Liverpool in recent weeks.
After the Reds’ 3-0 away win over Marseille, Gerrard was quick to praise the new head coach’s approach, insisting Slot deserved “a lot of praise and credit” for a tactically sharp European performance. He did, however, deliver a typically straight-talking reminder about what comes with the Liverpool job, saying thatthat the Dutchman “needs to stop mentioning low blocks” because defensive gameplans like that “have been happening against Liverpool since I was playing. That’s just the way it is.”
Those media appearances have only fuelled speculation and excitement whenever Gerrard’s name is linked with Anfield. And now, the club’s iconic former captain is officially on his way back – this time lacing up his boots again.
Liverpool have confirmed that Steven Gerrard will return to Anfield to play for LFC Legends against Borussia Dortmund Legends in a charity fixture this March. The game will take place on Saturday March 28, with kick-off at 3pm GMT, as another star-studded Legends occasion comes back to L4.
The 44-year-old will join a growing list of former Reds already signed up for the match. The current LFC Legends squad to face Dortmund includes:
Goalkeepers: Pepe Reina, Jerzy Dudek, Sander Westerveld
Defenders: Sami Hyypiä, Fabio Aurelio, Gregory Vignal, Martin Kelly
Midfielders/Attackers: Yossi Benayoun
More players will no doubt be announced in the coming weeks and months. As always with the Legends fixtures, there is a serious purpose behind the nostalgia. All proceeds from the match – supported by AXA and held in association with Forever Reds – will go directly to the work of LFC Foundation and the Forever Reds association.
This year’s funds will support LFC Foundation’s employability programmes, which help people across the community find work, gain qualifications and develop new skills through mentoring and training. The game will also contribute to the Foundation’s long-term strategy of supporting 500,000 people per season by 2030.
