Report: Liverpool ready to sanction bizarre transfer before end of January

Reports indicate that Tottenham are working hard on a deal to sign Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson in the summer transfer window.

The Reds are enduring a frustrating season, but things have improved of late and one of the reasons why is that Milos Kerkez is finding his feet at left-back.

His start to life was awkward but over the last 2-3 months, Kerkez has been one of the most consistent performers for Arne Slot.

Conversely, Robertson has struggled for minutes and now looks like he could leave the club now and not in the summer. At 31, Robbo will be desperate to play as regularly as possible before his career comes to an end.

Tottenham working to complete Andy Robertson transfer early

According to a surprise report from David Ornstein and The Athletic, Spurs are keen to sign Robertson this month before the January transfer window closes.

The report reads: “The north London club initially identified Robertson as a target for this summer and planned to be among multiple suitors vying to recruit the Scotland international as a free agent when his contract expires on June 30.

“But that pursuit was brought forward in an effort to strengthen head coach Thomas Frank’s squad immediately and amicable negotiations between all parties are advancing as Spurs attempt to land the 31-year-old left-back.”

Selling Robertson would mean recalling Kostas Tsimikas from Roma loan spell

According to the report from Ornstein, Liverpool could sanction the move as they have the ability to replace Robertson’s cover with Tsimikas.

Ornstein continued: “Robertson has slipped behind summer signing Milos Kerkez at Anfield and, while his departure may leave Liverpool light in natural cover, they have the ability to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell with Roma.”

While it will be nice to see Robertson go and get a transfer that will provide him more game time, it’s not a wise move that suits Liverpool.

The reason Tsimikas was sent on loan and not Robertson was that Slot trusts the latter more.

Liverpool need as much help as possible to finish in the top four this season and messing with the script now feels like an ill-timed move.
