Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Marseille was not flawless, but it was their first truly comfortable and convincing victory in a long time. Whisper it quietly, but there is a growing sense of optimism around the Reds in Europe, with echoes of 2004/05.
Liverpool have often struggled against physical, English opposition this season, yet have looked far more assured in big European away games. Marseille now join Inter Milan on the list of notable scalps, with both Madrid sides also beaten at Anfield.
Elsewhere, Liverpool FC Women have been active in the transfer market, signing Aurelie Csillag from SC Freiburg and experienced Republic of Ireland international midfielder Denise O’Sullivan. Liverpool defender Hannah Silcock has officially completed a loan move to Birmingham City for the rest of the season.
She has joined the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 side in search of further senior experience. An England U23 international, Silcock made her Reds debut during the 2021-22 campaign and has gone on to make 22 appearances for the club.
In 2023, she gained further senior experience during a loan spell at Blackburn Rovers, where she featured regularly for the former second-tier side. The 21-year-old signed a new contract with Liverpool ahead of the current season.
Birmingham are next in action on Saturday, away to Portsmouth in WSL 2. Silcock said: “It’s really exciting to be here. It’s been on the back of my mind for a while and I’ve been really looking forward to it. I’m happy to be at Birmingham City.
“I spoke with Amy and Hope and the project around the club feels really exciting and really ambitious. It matches everything I believe in, so it was a no-brainer. “I want to get as many minutes as possible, improve myself and help get Birmingham back into the WSL.”
A talented defender with top-flight experience. 👊
