Tottenham have made a breakthrough in their bid to land a two-time Premier League winner.
Tottenham have made a breakthrough in their bid to bolster their defence with the signing of Liverpool veteran Andy Robertson. Spurs are intent on strengthening their ranks this summer after being hit by a number of injuries over recent weeks.
Mohammed Kudus, Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur are all out for at least a couple of months, and those blows were the last thing Thomas Frank needed after seeing his side drop into the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Offensive signings are a priority for Tottenham during this transfer window, with Brennan Johnson having been sold earlier in the month, while Dejan Kulusevski is still not ready to return from his long-term lay-off.
But Tottenham are also looking to strengthen their defence after losing Ben Davies until at least April following ankle surgery. Meanwhile, Radu Dragusin is being linked with a move to Italy amid reported interest.
Liverpool star Andy Robertson has been a long-term target of Tottenham’s, and the North London side were lining up a free transfer this summer, when the Scot’s contract is due to expire. But amid declining league form and injuries, Spurs decided to move that deal forward to this window.
Tottenham have been in talks with Liverpool over a deal, and London World now understands that a deal has been reached.
The fee involved in the deal is not clear at this point, but it’s expected Spurs will pay somewhere in the region of £12million to £15million. Robertson would likely command a bigger fee in normal circumstances, but with the 31-year-old’s contract up this summer, Liverpool are in a tricky position.
Spurs could potentially get Robertson for free in the summer, but paying the money now means they avoid competition and benefit from the defender’s experience between now and the end of the season as they look to push towards the European spots.
Robertson has voiced concern over his play time of late, and the promise of regular football will be attractive to him as he looks to go into a huge World Cup campaign with Scotland this summer in good rhythm and form.
Robertson joined Liverpool for £8million from Hull City in 2017 and he has proven to be one of the best value-for-money signings in recent memory. The defender has played a key role in winning two Premier League titles, two Champions League titles and many other trophies. He has made more than 300 appearances for the Merseyside club across all competitions.
What Robertson has said about his future
Speaking about his future earlier this month, Robertson said: “We’ll see what happens. We’ve had chats now which will remain private. I've spoken to them and we’ll see what happens."
Asked if he wants to stay at Anfield, he added: “It’s a difficult question to answer. I’ve got five months left and we need to see the option to stay or if there’s options to go and things like that. I’ll sit down with my family and decide.
"After a stressful summer, I’m just trying to enjoy being a part of it and being a Liverpool player. I wanted to qualify for the World Cup and thankfully we’ve managed to do that. I need to see what myself and my family want moving forward."
