Arsenal are said to be eyeing a blockbuster signing ahead of the summer.
Arsenal are reportedly said to be considering another huge transfer this summer as they look to press home their dominance. The Gunners look to be strong candidates to win the Premier League this season, potentially ending a well over two-decade-long wait for their next title.
Arsenal have spent hundreds of millions to get into this situations, with the Gunners having consistently been among the biggest spenders in the league over recent years. The most recent window was no different, aside from the fact Andrea Berta oversaw spending rather than Edu Gaspar, who left the club early last year.
Much of the concentration was placed on making sure there was serious depth in all positions, with players added in key positions to create real competition for places. In the past, too many Arsenal starters have effectively been guaranteed starts, but with the additions of Martin Zubimendi, Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madeueke, very few players are safe.
That kind of competition is the difference between having a squad capable of being title hopefuls and title winners, and Arteta now looks to have the latter. Recruitment is a never-ending task, though, and Arsenal will continue to strengthen in the summer, ahead of what they hope will be a title defence next season.
The money spent may have to reduce at some point to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, but it seems the Gunners are still hoping to make a statement signing.
Alvarez interest
One player Arsenal are being linked with ahead of the summer is Atletico Madrid superstar Julian Alvarez, with ESPN claiming there is credible interest in the player.
The Argentine is a proven commodity having previously won two Premier League titles with Manchester City, but he left within 18 months to be a bonified starter at Atletico. Alvarez was part of City’s treble-winning team, while he has also won the World Cup and Copa Ámerica with Argentina.
The forward joined the Spanish giants on a deal worth £82.3million and hasn’t disappointed. This season alone he has 11 goals and five assists under his belt, while he has scored 24 goals in 57 league appearances overall.
Atletico would likely command a big fee for Alvarez, reportedly asking for £87million last summer. And it must be said, it’s difficult to see what Arsenal’s plan would be for the Argentine. While Gabriel Jesus’ future is unclear, Arteta is a big fan of Kai Havertz’s, and Alvarez would be a first-choice player, likely meaning a Havertz exit. Having said that, it would be a huge upgrade for the Gunners if they are willing to do it, and it would give an unstoppable look to that strikers’ room.
