Never go back to an ex. That’s what they say anyway, but as far as Liverpool are concerned, they have quite a few decent ones. From players who left the club for first-team experience and have blossomed into top talents, are those who went looking for a new challenge, but it didn’t quite work out.
What if Liverpool were to make a return for some of these players though? Would it be worthwhile, and more importantly, would it be value for money? Express Sport have picked out four former Liverpool stars who could make triumphant returns.
Harry Wilson officially left Liverpool in 2022 and at the time he wouldn’t have been on anyone’s radar for making a comeback. If truth be told, he probably wouldn’t have been spoken about until the beginning of this season, but the Welshman has taken his game to the next level and is turning heads across the division. While he's unlikely to be considered starting quality, given Wilson is out of contract in the summer, perhaps the Merseysiders could bring him into the team to help boost their squad depth.
Jarell Quansah joined Bayer Leverkusen in the summer and has caught the eye with his performances for the German outfit. To the point where Liverpool, who have had some centre-back problems this season, might’ve been looking over with a regretful eye. It’s reported that Liverpool do have a buyback option for the Englishman, and while it doesn’t come into play until the summer of 2027, if he keeps these performances up, the Premier League champions could be forced into a move sooner.
Now just imagine this. Trent Alexander-Arnold hasn’t hit the ground running since joining Real Madrid in the summer, with tentative talk that he hasn’t settled already coming out of the Spanish capital. He’d certainly have a lot of making up to do with the Liverpool faithful, but after all, home is where the heart is, and Alexander-Arnold’s heart is still in Liverpool.
And finally, Tyler Morton, who came through the Liverpool academy, but never really got a crack at the first team. Morton moved over to France and joined Lyon, who he has starred for this season. A return to Anfield might seem like unlikely right now, but at just 23 years old, he certainly has time on his side.
