Chelsea plotting surprise move to sign ‘outstanding’ Man Utd star, he’s likely to leave - report

Chelsea could be set to make a move for one of the Premier League's most experienced stars in the summer transfer window, according to reports - with Manchester United star Harry Maguire on their radar for a potential move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have had a topsy-turvy January already, sacking Enzo Maresca as manager on New Year's Day, whilst also being in the hunt for Premier League midfielder Douglas Luiz to bolster their midfield ranks.

However, with the future in sight, the west London outfit could also make a move for Maguire to come into their ranks as an experienced defender, something that is badly needed in the capital city for Liam Rosenior to succeed.

The report by CaughtOffside states that Maguire is considered as 'highly likely' to leave United on a free transfer this summer, with Chelsea being 'surprise' suitors for his signature.

The 'outstanding' 32-year-old is nearing the end of his deal at Old Trafford, and given the fact he's made almost 300 Premier League appearances, it's no wonder there is vast top-flight interest in his services.

The likes of West Ham United, Everton and Bournemouth are labelled as having interest in his services, whilst Serie A duo Napoli and Roma are also in the running.

However, Chelsea have also been named as a surprise destination, with the Blues keen on bringing in an experienced star to marshal their young backline, though their one incoming from United won't be Kobbie Mainoo, who Chelsea have also been linked with.

The Blues have had a similar incident in recent years with Thiago Silva being prominent in their defensive ranks, where they won the Champions League under his guidance, and that could tempt BlueCo into doing the same given the absence of trophies in their tenure.

Maguire's Experience Would be Hugely Beneficial to Chelsea Even Without Game Time

Maguire still has a lot to offer at Premier League level, despite a lack of appearances for United this season, featuring just 11 times in all competitions under Ruben Amorim, Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick.

Despite being 33 by the time the season ends, he's actually been one of United's key performers when playing in recent months, and results have had a general upturn when he's on the pitch.

Chelsea are gunning for Champions League football alongside United, and landing Maguire at the end of the season could see him add to his 15 appearances in the competition.

That experience at both club and national level could come in handy for the Blues in the coming years, with Maguire having been to European finals with both United and England, as well as winning trophies with the Red Devils.
