Liverpool spent over £400m on new players during the 2025 summer transfer window, yet they still have issues with their squad.
At centre-back, Joe Gomez is expected to leave this year, and Ibrahima Konate is set to become a free agent.
That will leave just two senior central defenders at the club, one of whom is a 19-year-old who’s spending the rest of 2025/26 sidelined.

Further forward, Liverpool lack midfield depth, with Curtis Jones, who is wanted by Tottenham, the only quality cover for Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.
But even on that front, some fans think Jones is a squad player at best and shouldn’t be starting regularly.
Now, Jamie Carragher has taken issue with the lack of backup Liverpool have on the wings.
Cody Gakpo not good enough as Liverpool squad questioned
Richard Hughes sanctioned the sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich in the summer, leaving the Reds with very little pace up front.

Now, speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Carragher suggested Liverpool have no backup for Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo, the latter of whom he thinks isn’t ‘quite good enough’.
He said: “The makeup of Liverpool’s squad and the numbers is not right. There’s actually no backup for Salah and Gakpo really.
“And we’re sort of saying Salah’s what, 33, and Gakpo, we probably look at and probably say not quite good enough.
“And there’s no actual backup for them. I think the makeup of the squad and the squad that he’s [Slot] got. So any manager, I think, would find it tough, and I know there’ll be supporters here saying you spent £450m, and I get that, but that shows for me it’s more of a collective. It’s the people above him.”

Are Liverpool going to sign a new winger
Gakpo has seven goals in all competitions this term, with five of those coming in the Premier League.
However, the Dutchman remains a source of frustration for Liverpool fans amid his continued desire to consistently cut inside and shoot, rather than trying to link up with Milos Kerkez more.
But it looks as though supporters will have to wait until the summer to see any changes made to their frontline or any other area of the squad.
Slot suggested Liverpool won’t make any signings in his pre-Bournemouth press conference this week.
But when the 2026 summer window rolls around, Yan Diomande has been heavily linked and has said he would like to play at Anfield.
Diomande has played the majority of his games for RB Leipzig on the right this season, though he is very capable on the left as well, so he may well be able to replace Gakpo in the long term.
