Arne Slot does not deserve ridicule from Liverpool fans after lovely gesture towards his former club - opinion

For some Liverpool supporters, Arne Slot can simply not do anything right this season.

Despite unexpectedly winning the Premier League during his debut season with the Reds last term, a sudden drop-off has many fans wishing to see the Dutchman sacked.

It remains to be seen whether the Liverpool owners will listen to a big portion of the fanbase and relieve Slot of his duties, but if they do, the axe is unlikely to swing before the end of the season.

In the meantime, a dissenting section of supporters are willing to slam Slot for each and every decision he makes and every comment he relays to the press. For those people, the Liverpool head coach can no longer win.

The latest stick in the craw for those fans is the sight of Slot modelling a new anniversary strip for former club PEC Zwolle. After the 47-year-old headed home to take part in a special photoshoot for the club he spent 13 years at, any Liverpool fans giving him flak should be seriously ashamed.

Having joined the youth set-up at Zwolle in 1993, Slot went on to make 253 appearances for the club across two spells at the start and end of his career.

As a result, Slot is remembered as a legend for Zwolle and was invited alongside other greats of the club to take part in the release of their new 115-year anniversary kit.

Kitted out in a clean-looking white strip with green shorts and green trim, it is nice to see the Liverpool boss getting back to his roots. But not everyone is happy.

Some Liverpool supporters have decided that Slot’s extra-curricular trip to his old club is not appropriate given the current circumstances of their season. However, they could not be more wrong.

Liverpool fans need to lay off Slot

Slot is certainly not immune from criticism this season and he has deservedly come under fire for some odd decisions and some even stranger comments in the public sphere.

But this is actually a lovely gesture towards a club who gave him a senior career in the game.

Slot is clearly a person who has never forgotten his roots and is giving back where he can. Whatever the naysayers claim, that could not be more befitting of Liverpool FC.

The Dutchman may not be in charge beyond this summer as the Reds weigh up a potential move for Xabi Alonso. But in the meantime, he deserves support and, above all, respect.

Some of the criticism has gone overboard, and to have an issue with Slot supporting his former side in this manner is simply ludicrous. Whichever way the wind blows from here, this is a Premier League-winning Liverpool manager and he deserves to be treated as such.
