Beth Mead was the star of the show in Saturday’s 2-0 win away to Chelsea in the Barclays Women’s Super League.
It was her clinical strike that put us in front at Stamford Bridge early in the second half, and Mead was also involved in the second goal, finding Mariona Caldentey to pick out the bottom right.
Asked to sum up her feelings afterwards, Beth said: “Obviously super proud of the team. Obviously, we've had a lot of frustrating games recently. We can't put the ball in the back of the net. Obviously, it felt a little bit like that in the first half, but yes, came out second half, had a dominant display, put two goals in the back of the net, were composed in the front of goal and really nice to get three points here today.
“I remember [my goal] really well. I think Steph did a really good job putting pressure on, found Alessia, and then Alessia obviously compacted their defence to give me a bit of space on the side.
“Thank God I finished well this time. So yeah, really nice goals, good composure, different types of goals and happy to get them in the back of the net.”

So why is it that we were able to come flying out of the traps in the second half and deliver such a strong showing?
“I mean, we know we have to against teams like this,” Mead said. “We should be doing that always, but especially against a team like Chelsea, they start games really well. And we had to put it on them and we did just that. And we obviously got the two goals in quick succession. We enjoyed ourselves out there today.”
The two goals brought about wild celebrations in the away end and our supporters were in full voice throughout the afternoon, creating memorable moments for Mead and the team.
“The fans were incredible,” she added. “It was so nice. We were able to score the goals in front of them as well and celebrate that moment. We heard them all game. It was an incredible atmosphere and massive credit to them. Thank you as always, Gooners.”
