Trent Alexander-Arnold's market value has dropped over the course of the season in which he left Liverpool for Real Madrid. It has been a nightmare few months for the Spanish club and its full-back who made his decision with such big ambitions for his playing career.

Instead of making a huge impact in the Spanish capital having run down his Liverpool contract, Alexander-Arnold has spent much of his time troubled by persistent injuries. Lately, he has been sidelined since early December with a thigh issue and is not expected to return until the start of next month.

During that period Real Madrid have dropped behind fierce rivals Barcelona in the La Liga title race, and also lost the Spanish Super Cup final to the Catalan side earlier this month.

Xabi Alonso was relieved of his managerial duties in the aftermath of that defeat and replaced by fellow former Reds star Alvaro Arbeloa. To compile Alexander-Arnold's misery whilst still absent, the latest reports from Spain claim his new boss has already told the England international he is surplus to requirements at Madrid.

Acting as an indicator of just how far the full-back has fallen amid his lack of game time since lifting the Premier League trophy with Liverpool last May, now his market value is suggested to have dropped.

Transfermarkt's database list Alexander-Arnold's current transfer value at €70m (£60.6m) - a marginal drop from the €75m (£65m) he was worth at the end of his final month at Anfield.

As far as Transfermarkt are concerned, this makes the 27-year-old the world's 47th-most valuable footballer, ranked 12th in La Liga, and seventh amongst his Los Blancos teammates.

Bear in mind, Bernabeu chiefs should have no qualms with this sum. They paid Liverpool only £10m for the player when last summer's transfer window opened in June, accepting that financial hit so that Alonso would have his new signing available in time for the start of the FIFA Club World Cup.

But they are going to struggle to find a suitor who would be willing part ways with such an amount given Alexander-Arnold has not featured regularly for his club, which has also subsequently meant he has not been given a role in Thomas Tuchel's plans for the England national team of late.

As the departure from his boyhood club tarnished his relationship with Reds supporters, there are questions over whether Alexander-Arnold would be welcomed back to Liverpool later in his career.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Sport ahead of last November's Champions League clash between Liverpool and his and new club at Anfield, he explained: ""I will always be thankful for the opportunities [Liverpool gave me] and everything that we achieved together will live with me forever.

"So, no matter what, my feelings won't change towards Liverpool. I have got memories there that will last me a lifetime and no matter how I am received, that won't change."
