With the January transfer window approaching its climax, Arsenal appear unlikely to make any signings this month. Mikel Arteta's side are currently in fine form, sitting top of both the Premier League and Champions League standings.

Arteta has previously been left frustrated by the Gunners' inactivity during the mid-season window, as his teams lost momentum in the latter stages of campaigns and fell short in the title race. However, this season, following an extraordinary summer of investment where Arsenal splashed out over £250million, he has an almost impenetrable squad brimming with quality at his disposal.

This means following Ethan Nwaneri's loan move to Marseille this week, Arsenal are not expected to complete any further deals until the summer. Nevertheless, football.london now brings you two of the most recent transfer stories involving the league leaders.

Arsenal's ideal striker

Arteta has described his dream striker while explaining why the Gunners opted to sign Viktor Gyokeres last summer ahead of Benjamin Sesko. After an extended summer transfer saga where it remained uncertain which forward they would pursue, Arsenal ultimately signed Gyokeres from Portuguese side Sporting CP for £64m.

That paved the way for Manchester United to snap up Sesko from RB Leipzig later in the summer for £73.3m. When asked what qualities he was looking for when he made his decision, Arteta replied: “Well, first of all, goals. Someone that can guarantee you goals.

“We know that word doesn’t exist, but then someone very direct, very powerful, a proper nine who can stretch the pitch, who has the goal between the eyes, and somebody that can stretch the pitch for us a bit more, especially when we have to play against certain opposition.”

Asked to assess the Swede's underwhelming campaign thus far, Arteta said: “It’s very early to assess. I mean, let’s assess at the end of the season and something like that is even a very short sample.

“Understanding as well the league that we are competing and what is happening with the nines across the league as well, in the manner that the game is changing. So there are a lot of factors there to bear in mind to assess the player and then we’re going to assess the player not only with one of the aspects of the game but in many aspects of the game.”

£35m release clause opportunity

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is believed to be actively preparing for the forthcoming summer transfer window, where the Gunners will prioritise forwards and left-wingers. According to multiple reports, the north Londoners are monitoring Levante striker Karl Etta Eyong, among other potential signings.

Cameroonian talent Etta Eyong has notched an impressive six goals along with three assists across 17 La Liga appearances this campaign for the Spanish side. The 22-year-old's displays have reportedly caught Arsenal’s attention, though the Gunners may face stiff competition from the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid should they pursue the forward.

Etta Eyong reportedly has a £26m release clause in his contract, though that figure climbs to £35m for clubs outside of La Liga. He is under contract with Levante until 2029.
