Proposed Spurs trade sees San Antonio go all-in this season, replace Harrison Barnes with $112 million 22.3 Ppg forward

The San Antonio Spurs are five and a half games behind first place in the Western Conference, and have proven to be one of the breakout teams of this season. However, with the gap between first and second still quite large, and the gap from second to third closing, it may be time for a change.

Fansided’s Eamon Cassels proposed that the Spurs address their lack of three-point shooting and trade for New Orleans Pelicans star forward Trey Murphy III.

The trade would look like this:

Spurs get: F Trey Murphy III

Pelicans get: F Jeremy Sochan, F Harrison Barnes, three first-round picks

“Trey Murphy III fits in with the Spurs' length and versatility while providing some much-needed outside shooting. Notably, the Spurs rank just 18th in 3-pointers made, so improving upon this 3-point shooting would be logical. Adding Murphy could ultimately help the Spurs win a championship this season -- which is something that nobody expected. The bigger picture is that the Spurs could become the team to beat for the rest of the decade with a move like this,” Cassels wrote.

So far this season, Murphy is averaging 22.3 points, six rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.6 steals in 35.7 minutes per game. He’s also a great shooter from deep like Cassels noted, shooting 38% from the arc.

He would fit in great with the Spurs, becoming the second scoring option behind Victor Wembanyama, and replacing Harrison Barnes in the starting five. He’d also be a great kick option for a team that loves to drive to the basket. Overall, it’s a perfect fit.

Hopefully, the Spurs realize this and at least work on a proposal to the Pelicans in case they start to slip from the top of the West. Then, they have a team that can go head-to-head with literally everyone in the NBA.
