Another Premier League game, another nightmare for Liverpool and Arne Slot.

Liverpool are now winless in their first five Premier League games of 2026, despite hardly playing any teams in the top half.
Will Arne Slot be dismissed from his role if things continue like this? It has been suggested by one journalist that an interim manager can’t be ruled out if another poor run of form like the nine defeats in 12 from earlier this season happens again.
Steven Gerrard wants to help Liverpool
Well, given we’re yet to see three points earned in the league this year, an interim manager may not be the worst thing in the world.

On that front, Liverpool fans have already asked for Steven Gerrard to come in and do a job for the remainder of the campaign.
The club icon could have a similar impact to what Michael Carrick is having at Manchester United right now.
Crucially, he would boost morale not only inside Anfield but also among the fanbase, who have been served some truly disappointing matches this season.
Furthermore, Gerrard has already said he’ll help Liverpool in any way he can.
Speaking in December, he stated: “I’ll be brutally, brutally honest with you. I’d help Liverpool in any department at any minute of every day. I’d help them with anything.
“I don’t want Arne Slot to lose his job. I want him to fix this and turn it around and make Liverpool great. I was bouncing all over the city four or five months ago when Liverpool won the league.”

Xabi Alonso is the long-term solution
Meanwhile, if Liverpool don’t want to appoint an interim manager, which is fair enough, they already have a clear long-term replacement available.
The Reds wanted Alonso to replace Jurgen Klopp initially, but he chose to stay at Bayer Leverkusen at the time.
The Spaniard then went on to have an unsuccessful stint at Real Madrid, whom he left towards the beginning of January.
Again, he’s another club legend, Liverpool have already spoken to him about the role previously, and he is, despite the Madrid stint, already a very successful manager in Europe.
Manchester City have been linked to Alonso as well as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola, but if FSG are smart, they would make an approach before City even get the chance.
