Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola explained the tactical tweak that helped his side secure dramatic victory against Liverpool. Amine Adli scored in the fifth minute of additional time to send the Reds tumbling to a 3-2 Premier League defeat at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Cherries had taken control with a quickfire first-half double through Evanilson and Alejandro Jimenez before Liverpool struck back with Virgil van Dijk before Dominik Szoboszlai netted a free-kick with 10 minutes remaining.

Arne Slot’s side, though, physically wilted in the remainder of the game as Bournemouth rediscovered their energy levels to earn only a second win in 15 games.

And Iraola said: “We are finding ways to get points and wins in a different way. Normally we go full gas and try to keep the energy until the end.

"Now probably because we don’t have the numbers we are choosing when to go, choosing to save a bit of energy until the end of the game.

“You are 2-1 up and they are pushing and you probably go more protective and maybe not aggressive enough. When we went 2-2 we started playing again. I liked the last few moments of the game.

“We have been on a very bad run but we have seven points from nine now.”

Of the late winner, he added: “It is probably the best moment to score. The game is over, just this long throw, so you know if you score it’s okay. It’s a win.

“Sometimes it happens differently this season. We have conceded late goals but when it happens and you score, it’s good.”

Virgil van Dijk was at fault for Bournemouth’s first goal when failing to deal with a long ball while Milos Kerkez was caught out by the run of Jimenez for the second.

“In the wind the first one is very difficult to defend as it goes in all directions,” said Iraola. “The second one was very close offside but luckily this time he was onside.”

Of the Liverpool goals, Iraola added: “Second one is a free-kick he finished very well. First one is one we should defend better. We know we are not the tallest team and it’s happening we are conceding set-piece goals.

“We are trying to balance it but I’d like to start conceding less set plays as defensively we have been very good.”
