A closer look at the latest Premier League transfer news involving Aston Villa and Liverpool
Aston Villa may be forced to pay above the odds if they want to complete the signing of transfer target Jean-Philippe Mateta.
This could be quite the stumbling block for Unai Emery’s side, who are being mindful of ongoing concerns about profit and sustainability restrictions this window and heading into the summer.
Aston Villa may need to pay over the odds for Jean-Philippe Mateta
Villa have been linked with the Crystal Palace striker but according to football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, they may have to pay above the asking price to get a deal over the line.
“So it’s obvious with what’s going on at Palace, and the manager coming out and making the comments, with [Marc] Guehi moving, he’s the next one that everybody’s looking at,” Plumley told Football Insider.
“At some point, Villa would probably have to pay a bit of a premium to get him, would be my view. It might cost Villa a little bit more than they want to pay, which could be the kind of make or break given their financial challenges with UEFA and having to be careful of that.
“But I think it’s a viable move, for sure because, you know, he’s hoping for a move, and he’s a good Premier League transfer for Villa if they can make it work.”
The 3AM Verdict: Crystal Palace are a hot bed for transfer targets right now so it makes sense they are looking to get the most money possible out of key players. As for Aston Villa, there are already reports of them being forced tosell existing players to fund future transfers.
Liverpool handed boost for ‘dream’ £87m star
Liverpool are keen on signing Yan Diomande to bolster their attack this summer and they could be given a significant leg-up in the competition. Premier League rivals Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also in the race for the 19-year-old star but a new update has put the ball in the Reds’ court.
According to Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas (via TEAMtalk), both Spurs and United have taken a step back from the Diomande chase. This paves the way for Liverpool to swoop in for a ‘dream’ summer signing.
The RB Leipzig star is valued at €100 million (£87m) and is reportedly keen on the idea of signing for the Reds.
The 3AM Verdict: Liverpool have already spent a huge amount of money on new forwards but with doubt over Mohamed Salah’s future, they are looking for a new jewel in their crown. It’s a very promising situation for the Reds but they will need to rely on Diomande committing to his reported Anfield preference.
