Fabrizio Romano reports surprise development in Harvey Elliott saga after Liverpool make recall feelings clear

Harvey Elliott’s spell away from Liverpool hasn’t gone as we were expecting, but an update from Fabrizio Romano suggests a change in fortunes for the 22-year-old.

Liverpool have been monitoring Elliott’s situation closely, with the young star failing to make his mark at Aston Villa.

The January window drawing to a close, and a decision needs to be made on his future.

Elliott has been linked with an MLS move, though it’s thought he’s not too keen on the idea. He might not have to consider it after a surprise Unai Emery decision.

Fabrizio Romano on Harvey Elliott back in the Aston Villa squad

Elliott hasn’t been included in a league matchday squad since October — that changes this weekend.

He will travel with the team to St. James’ Park to face Newcastle, as Villa look to recover form after a disappointing run of results in the Premier League.

Fabrizio Romano shared the news on X, and provided more on the interest from across the pond.

He writes: “Harvey Elliott travelled with Aston Villa squad as he’s part of the team for Sunday game. Unused since October, Elliott didn’t open doors to MLS move so far despite Charlotte FC approaches.”

It’s an unexpected development, but a welcome one.

It did feel like the experiment was coming to an end with how little he featured during Villa’s fantastic run of form. Elliott hasn’t impressed at Villa Park.

But with Donyell Malen gone to Roma at the start of the window, it frees up minutes in the attack that he has to seize with both hands.

Liverpool aren’t interested in recalling Elliott this season, so they will be equally pleased to see him back in the picture at Villa.

Elliott looks set to leave Liverpool for good in the summer

Considering his age, there’s an argument to be made that Elliott should be given another chance at Anfield.

He has endeared himself to the Liverpool fanbase, and there’s still plenty of time for him to improve.

That doesn’t feel likely, though. The attacking midfield position is not in need of depth really — out wide is where Liverpool need strengthening.

Arne Slot doesn’t like playing Elliott out on the wing, as we discovered last season. The only avenue for him to return might be a change in manager, and even then, it’s not guaranteed.

At least Elliott can finish out his loan better than he started it if he takes the chance Emery has given him.
