Man United star who 'snubbed' Mikel Arteta and Arsenal can now be key for Michael Carrick

Michael Carrick nearly has a fully fit Manchester United squad to pick from for the trip to face Arsenal in the Premier League.

Only Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui are unavailable for Manchester United for the trip to The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

It means Michael Carrick will have the same pool of players to pick from as he did in the 2-0 win over Manchester City last week.

There are several selection headaches for Carrick and his backroom staff to mull over, including how to organise United’s attack in North London.

Matheus Cunha was benched against City but came on to make an impact. As did Mason Mount, who had a goal controversially disallowed at the Etihad Stadium.

Mikel Arteta was ‘snubbed’ by Mason Mount in 2023

After a slow start to life in Manchester, Mount had a brilliant 2025 under Ruben Amorim, who was a huge admirer of his talent.

It seems Arsenal boss Arteta is also a big admirer of the English playmaker. Back in 2023, when United paid £60m to sign Mount from Chelsea, the Gunners were also interested in his signature.

Arteta was ‘stunned’ that Mount chose United and snubbed Arsenal, as he was confident he would end up in North London.

After missing out on Mount, Arsenal instead went and signed Kai Havertz, who is expected to miss Sunday’s clash with a knee injury.

Mason Mount can star for Man United vs Arsenal

United’s record against Arsenal is bleak, especially away from home.

It is up to Carrick to try and get United’s first win at The Emirates since 2017 in the Premier League.

Supporters can expect United to play a similar style of football to the win over Manchester City, with the Red Devils looking to exploit Arsenal on the counter-attack.

Mount scored with his first touch against City, although it was controversially disallowed for an offside in the build-up.

While he may not start in North London, the 27-year-old has proven he can have a big impact from the bench against tiring defences.

Mount will certainly not get a good reception at The Emirates because of his United and Chelsea links, but that could spur him on to sting Arteta one more time.
