Spurs had emerged as a suitor for the Liverpool defensive stalwart as the January transfer window reaches its climax.

Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool reportedly remain locked in negotiations over a January transfer move for Andy Robertson as the London outfit looks to strengthen before the end of the window.

Thomas Frank has been deploying the right-footed Djed Spence at left back this season with Destiny Udogie struggling with injury. The Italian is now fit again but Tottenham appear to remain in the market for another option in the position.

Robertson has emerged as the top target. The 31-year-old has racked up 364 appearances for Liverpool since arriving at Anfield but is no longer a shoo-in for the starting XI and has played 90 minutes in the Premier League on just one occasion this season.

The defender is also out of contract at the end of this season and Spurs are aware of that. Frank’s side have recently lost Ben Davies to injury and are seeing Radu Dragusin linked with a move to Italy.

LondonWorld had reported that Spurs were prioritising a summer move for Robertson as a free agent but recent form has fast-tracked that swoop. On Saturday, it was believed that a ‘major breakthrough’ has been found between the top flight rivals with a deal reached.

It’s expected that Tottenham will pay somewhere between £12 million and £15 million for the Scotsman. However, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on the move and suggests that negotiations may have hit somewhat of a snag.

Taking to social media on Sunday, Romano wrote: “Negotiations between Tottenham and Liverpool for Andy Robertson deal are still ongoing. After opening proposal sent on Friday, the two clubs remain in talks over fee.”

The feeling is that the transfer move is a feasible one and Frank was asked about Robertson after the 2-2 draw with Burnley. He said: “In general, I don't speak about players that are not in the club, so that's no comment.”

Speaking about his future earlier this month, Robertson said: “We’ll see what happens. We’ve had chats now which will remain private. I've spoken to them and we’ll see what happens."

Asked if he wants to stay at Anfield, he added: “It’s a difficult question to answer. I’ve got five months left and we need to see the option to stay or if there’s options to go and things like that. I’ll sit down with my family and decide.

"After a stressful summer, I’m just trying to enjoy being a part of it and being a Liverpool player. I wanted to qualify for the World Cup and thankfully we’ve managed to do that. I need to see what myself and my family want moving forward."
