The worrying prediction Jamie Carragher has made about Jeremy Jacquet at Chelsea

Liam Rosenior fielded another centre-back pairing on Sunday as Trevoh Chalobah returned to the starting line-up alongside Benoit Badiashile at Crystal Palace.

Tosin and Badiashile combined in Rosenior’s first, Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah in the second. Then, Tosin and Chalobah against Brentford, and then Fofana and Chalobah.

Sunday then, saw a fifth different centre-back pairing. With Tosin injured, Chalobah came back in to partner Badiashile. It highlights the need for a new centre-back at Chelsea.

While most can see that an experienced head makes most sense, given the inexperience of Chelsea’s options in the middle of the defence, Chelsea want a 20-year-old talent.

Jamie Carragher makes Jeremy Jacquet prediction

As things stand, Chelsea remain in talks to sign Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes. The France U21 ace wants a move to Stamford Bridge, even if Rennes are desperate to keep him.

Nothing has materialised yet, with Julien Laurens explaining that a move will only occur if Rennes receive more than the fee they were paid for Jeremy Doku by Manchester City.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s clash against Palace on Sky Sports News’ Premier League coverage, Jamie Carragher believes the signing of Jacquet is similar to what they have.

“The reason they chop and change centre-backs so often is that they’ve got so many of them. But they’re all the same level. There’s no real standout,” Carragher said on Sunday.

“That defender [Jacquet] will come in will show great potential, great pedigree, but he’ll make mistakes because he’s young, and that’s what young defenders do,” he added.

“That’s definitely an area they have to improve. If they don’t, I don’t see anyone outside Chelsea being worried about them winning a league title in the next year or two.”

Jeremy Jacquet compared to Arsenal’s William Saliba

Jacquet remains Chelsea’s top target even though the Blues are now targeting other additions in midfield and up top. Jacquet has been a priority ever since Rosenior arrived.

Rosenior himself is a fan of Jacquet having watched him at first hand while in charge at Strasbourg. Speaking on Sky Sports this week, Laurens likened him to William Saliba.

“Liam Rosenior knows him, seen him in action. He’s going to be amazing, he reminds me of Saliba, when he burst onto the scene in France. Wesley Fofana at St. Etienne, too.”

But many ask, why are Chelsea investing so much when the need at Stamford Bridge is for an experienced defender? Ray Parlour has urged Chelsea to re-sign Antonio Rudiger.
