Romano latest: Chelsea “approach rejected” but Blues ready to line up huge summer deal after…

While Chelsea were winning 3-1 away from home at Crystal Palace, things were afoot in the transfer market.

The Blues weren’t expected to do much this month – and indeed they haven’t. But a couple of weeks ago there was a sudden rush of chatter, headed up by Fabrizio Romano, that they were keen on signing Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes.

The young defender does look exceptional, but his club know it, and they’re asking €70m or more according to most reports. There was no way Chelsea were going to spend that sort of cash in January, and now even Romano is admitting it.

The transfer insider has just posted a message saying that “Chelsea’s approach has been rejected” for a January move, but that the Blues remain “keen on a deal ASAP for the summer.”

So while we won’t see Jacquet line up in a Blue shirt this season, we could yet see a major deal announced ahead of the summer. Liverpool and Bayern Munich are also interested, making a speedy conclusion all the more important.

That gives up a little more time to arrange some sales – we’d expect Benoit Badiashile and Tosin to be added to Axel Disasi on the list of potential departures if a deal for Jacquet is indeed concluded. Let’s hope it doesn’t mean Acheampong leaving, that wouldn’t be a trade we’re happy to make.

In other news…

It was a positive day for Chelsea overall, but there was one decision that Rosenior made that people weren’t so sure about.

Joao Pedro doubled Chelsea’s lead with a powerful finish through Dean Henderson after he was set up by Estevao. He’s done his case for starting on Wednesday a massive load of good today.
