The Sacramento Kings are linked to a seemingly endless number of trade rumors right now, including Ja Morant and Jonathan Kuminga. Well, the Kings should turn their focus to those players' respective teammates, Cam Spence and Pat Spencer. Why? Those two dogs are the future of the league.
Talk of Kuminga moving to the Kings is not new. The fractures between him and the Warriors organization have been evident for a long time, and almost came to a head over the summer. Despite reaching a deal, Kuminga is back on the trade block and potentially moving to Sacramento.
On the other hand, the Ja Morant situation is a bit newer. Again, this is another team/player relationship that has been on the rocks for quite some time. It's only quite recently that Memphis has started talking trade, and once again, Sacramento's name is in the rumor mix on this one.
Trading for Kuminga makes sense. The young forward has a lot of skill, a strong basketball IQ, and is the kind of guy every team wants in the locker room, according to Draymond Green. Ja Morant is the exact opposite of two of those three things, so trading for him makes much less sense.
The Kings need to unite the Spencer brothers
Once again, the Kings are targeting the wrong players. Pat Spencer of the Golden State Warriors and Cam Spencer of the Memphis Grizzlies are where the focus should be. The Spencer brothers are absolute menaces on the court and are literally ready to take on any challenger.
The Spencers have carved out names for themselves as skilled, reliable players who aren't afraid to do what's necessary to grind out wins. And that's on their own, on separate teams. Together, they could be a dangerous power duo that tears apart the competition.
Pat and Cam have heart, and that is exactly what the Kings need right now and through the rebuild. You can stack the team with shooters and ballers, then still watch the team crash and burn. Without an engine, this whole exercise will go nowhere. That engine could be the Spencers.
Look, the Kings should still try to trade for Kuminga. There's no question of that. They should also avoid Ja Morant like the plague. There's even less question of that. At the same time, the Spencers are exactly the kind of players the Kings need to change their fortunes.
