BlueCo aren't messing around: Chelsea now join race for £61m star who's "among the best in…

Chelsea have now joined the race to sign a £61m goalkeeper who's "among the best in Europe".

Blues keen on new goalkeeper after Sanchez mistakes

Following Sanchez's mistakes in the 3-2 victory against Arsenal in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final, Liam Rosenior took responsibility, saying: "I'm asking Rob to do things that he hasn't done before. I said to him before the game, and I made this really clear, when my players make mistakes, I'm accountable. That's on me.

"He made a save in the second half that was absolutely world-class. That could have put us out of the tie. He will improve in terms of his understanding."

However, the Spaniard has since responded well, keeping a clean sheet in the 2-0 victory against Brentford, which earned him a 8.7 SofaScore match rating, the highest of any player.

The 28-year-old has received his fair share of praise this season, having shown real signs of improvement, but BlueCo have now set out to bring in a new goalkeeper, and they mean business, with an expensive transfer possibly on the cards.

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), which states Chelsea have now joined the race to sign AS Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar, although a deal could break the bank, with the Italian club potentially set to hold out for €70m (£61m).

There may also be competition for Svilar's signature, with AFC Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur also keen, given the level of his performances, which have earned the goalkeeper high praise from manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

The Roma boss said: "He’s a goalkeeper who brings a lot of points. He can be compared to a 25-goal striker. He’s certainly among the best in Europe."

"Fantastic" Svilar has earned move to top club

Gasperini has waxed lyrical about the 26-year-old in recent times, describing him as "fantastic" earlier this season, and he received the award of best Serie A goalkeeper in the 2024-25 campaign, particularly impressing in the Rome derby against Lazio.

The Serbian has already kept ten clean sheets in the Serie A so far this season, including one in each of his last three games, and he recently made four saves from inside the box to keep Stuttgart at Bay in a 2-0 Europa League victory.

The new manager could get his first signing.

As such, the Belgium-born goalkeeper clearly has the quality to be a success at Stamford Bridge, but a deal would be on the expensive side, given Roma's £61m asking price.

Not only that, but Chelsea may not even need to bring in a new goalkeeper, given that Sanchez has kept ten Premier League clean sheets this season, and Rosenior believes he can get even better, saying: "I’ve got a great connection with him. The scary thing with Rob is I can see how much he can improve as well."
