Liverpool are considering options to replace Arne Slot as frustrations continue to bubble

The former Reds midfielder is now out of a job after mutually parting ways with Real Madrid earlier this month. With tensions rising on Merseyside and frustration directed towards Arne Slot, reports continue to suggest Liverpool will be looking for a reunion with Alonso ahead of next season.

An interesting new update from Spain has suggested that the club has already been in contact with Alonso’s representatives and things look promising, should they explore options to replace the now struggling Slot.

Liverpool hold ‘positive contact’ with Xabi Alonso

According to AS, Liverpool are trying to assess their options, should they opt to sack Slot, and are looking to find out ‘if they can count on Alonso’. The Reds have been in ‘positive contact’ with the former midfielder’s representatives, which has brought ‘relief’ to the club.

It seems that Liverpool are putting a lot of thought into the idea of bringing Alonso back to his old stomping ground for their next chapter. The club respect the 44-year-old as both a former player and as a manager, having guided Bayer Leverkusen to their first ever Bundesliga title in 2024.

The report claims that Slot is aware that from now on, every Liverpool performance ‘puts his job on the line’. However, the Reds have reportedly ‘assured’ him that he will remain in charge of the team for the rest of the season. This suggests they will look to bring in someone new over the summer.

Will Xabi Alonso replace Arne Slot as Liverpool manager?

Alonso is not about to make any immediate decisions on his future and is happy to wait things out for a little while longer. However, he knows that he will be ‘welcomed back to Anfield’, should he enter serious discussions over returning to the club as a manager.

However, despite the report claiming he is willing to wait, neither Alonso nor his agent Inaki Ibanez are ‘turning their backs on what's on the horizon’. The Alonso camp is aware that one of the upcoming possibilities is to sign for Liverpool and he is said to be ‘determined to return to Anfield’.

While it appears positive talks have been held between the two parties, Liverpool fans will need to wait until the summer to discover if Alonso is headed back to Merseyside.
