Liverpool are expected to make a raft of changes to their squad once the 2025/26 season ends

James Pearce believes Liverpool are in for another expensive summer transfer window following what has been mostly a head-in-hands kind of season.

The Reds were expected to make some urgent signings this month, especially across the backline as their defensive options continue to deplete. However, the only deal looking close to materialising is going the other way, as Andy Robertson nears a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

There are also ‘question marks’ hanging over several other players, as Liverpool look a shadow of last season’s side that won the Premier League with a ten-point cushion.

‘Major transfer surgery’ required for Liverpool this summer

Writing for The Athletic, Pearce states that Liverpool will require ‘more major surgery’ on their squad in terms of new transfers.

Despite spending a record-breaking £446 million on new players last summer, the Reds are flailing in the Premier League this season. They are still without a win this year and pressure is once again stacking against Arne Slot, who is said to be aware that every game moving forwards risks his job.

Ibrahima Konate is expected to leave Liverpool as a free agent at this rate, while ‘question marks’ hang over the futures of Mohamed Salah, Joe Gomez and Federico Chiesa.

“More major surgery will be required this summer, and it won’t come cheap,” says Pearce.

Who will leave Liverpool this year?

Robertson is edging closer to a move to Tottenham, which will reportedly trigger Liverpool to recall Kostas Tsimikas from loan. Contract talks with Konate are still making little progress and signs are now pointing to him leaving the club in the summer.

Gomez came close to signing for AC Milan last summer and as his future is also in doubt, reports are suggesting he could also leave when the season ends.

Salah’s form has taken a tragic nose-dive this season and links with Saudi Arabia are prominent again in the media. The Egyptian’s contract expires next year and Liverpool could use this opportunity to bank some cash to build for the future.

As highlighted by Pearce, Chiesa is also a potential departure candidate. He has seriously struggled for minutes this season, even while Salah was competing at AFCON.
