The Minnesota Timberwolves currently view Coby White as one of their top solutions for their issue of lacking a starting point guard. Two consecutive Western Conference Finals appearances have seen them come close to making the NBA Finals before falling just short. Another spectacular season by Anthony Edwards sees them hoping to make a move before the deadline to boost their chances.

White has been a popular name linked to Minnesota, but NBA insider Jake Weinbach reports that the Timberwolves are offering a mediocre trade package:

“The Timberwolves pursuing Coby White with an offer around Mike Conley, Terrence Shannon Jr., and multiple second-round picks is a deadline deal worth monitoring. Minnesota and Chicago have reportedly remained in contact as the Wolves search the marketplace for a combo guard.”

The Chicago Bulls are shopping White ahead of the deadline, but they hold less leverage than the average team moving an asset. White’s contract expires at the end of the season and requires an extension. Chicago is trading White partially due to not wanting to pay him his ideal salary figure, so the next team will have to extend him after this season.

Chicago Wants More For Coby White

Previous reports showed that the Bulls had higher hopes of receiving better assets in a White trade. Chicago desired an unprotected first round draft pick from Minnesota or any other team interested in acquiring White. Multiple teams currently lacking a point guard is the rationale of the Bulls expecting someone to offer more than the Timberwolves.

Unfortunately, teams are trying to remain flexible for the upcoming offseason with a lot of players available. The Houston Rockets recently made it clear they aren’t expected to make major changes for a new point guard and will be content riding out the season with their current roster.

Minnesota remains the most mentioned team for White on the trade block. However, Chicago will be skeptical of trading White for second round picks, an aging veteran, and a 25-year-old who averages under 3 points per game. If no other teams come calling, the Timberwolves may hold all the leverage to limit the assets offered.

Minnesota Clearly Wants Coby White

One positive sign for Chicago is that Minnesota has confirmed their interest in White for months now via rumors and now official trade talks. The Timberwolves don’t have a lot to offer, so a secondary guard in the echelon of the NBA may be perfect. White would be able to run the offense when Edwards is on the bench, which is all they need.

Mike Conley and Terrence Shannon aren’t exciting options for the Bulls. Accepting this trade offer would be more about getting anything possible for White on the way out and hoping to secure cap space to go after a bigger name in free agency.

Minnesota could increase the odds of adding White by including a protected first round draft pick or a more promising player. Joan Beringer and Rob Dillingham are both exciting prospects, but the Timberwolves believe they have enough leverage to keep their young assets. Less than two weeks left will see either Chicago or Minnesota changing their stance if the trade takes place.
