Liverpool transfer state of play as £87m battle takes twist and bargain deal close

Liverpool could be set for a hectic end to the winter market, with the Reds expected to complete at least one deal before the January window closes. They are yet to make any signings or confirm any departures but that could be about to change. The reigning Premier League champions have endured a difficult season, leaving them with next to no chance of retaining the domestic honours.

In spite of their shortcomings, Arne Slot has conceded that it's unlikely Liverpool will sign any players before the end of the window. There is still plenty of time for that to change, though, with the rumour mill refusing to die down. A handful of players have also been linked with exits and one deal is thought to be particularly close.

£87m battle takes twist

Liverpool are expected to wait until the summer to make a move for RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande, according to Sky Sports.

The winger has emerged as one of the Bundesliga's brightest sparks and is thought to be attracting no shortage of Premier League interest.

The likes of Tottenham, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have also been linked with Diomande, who represented Ivory Coast at the recent Africa Cup of Nations.

However, many of those clubs have reportedly been put off by Leipzig's whopping asking price of around £87million. They are unwilling to sell their prized asset in the middle of the season unless it is made worth their while.

It means the battle for Diomande's signature will be fought in the summer, at which point Liverpool are likely to be in a stronger position than they are now.

Bargain deal edges closer

Liverpool are getting closer to sanctioning a bargain deal that would see Andy Robertson move to Tottenham.

The north Londoners opened talks over a potential January swoop last week, with the defender's contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Now, the Daily Mail are reporting that a transfer fee of just £5m would be enough for Spurs to seal the deal.

They initially wanted to sign Robertson on a free transfer in the summer, but have accelerated their interest due to a mounting injury crisis.

The left-back played in Liverpool's defeat to Bournemouth over the weekend, replacing Milos Kerkez for the second half.
