Former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp has urged the Anfield hierarchy to "help" Arne Slot by sanctioning new signings ahead of next week's transfer deadline. The Reds have been operating with a smaller squad for much of the campaign despite splashing out £450million on new players last summer.
A failed deal for England international centre-back Marc Guehi, who joined Manchester City this month, prompted fears of a shortage of defensive cover in September.
Those concerns have been realised with centre-back Giovanni Leoni and right-back Conor Bradley ruled out for the season with knee problems, while Joe Gomez was forced off early in Saturday's 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth having started only his third Premier League game since December 2024.
With Ibrahima Konate absent on compassionate leave and Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez both substituted with worries over their recent number of minutes, Liverpool ended the game at the weekend with a back four of Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson.
Robertson was the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur with Liverpool having held preliminary talks over a move for the 31-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer.
However, those talks have now ended and Redknapp believes the Reds should be strengthening their defensive options this month rather than weakening them further.
"Conor (Bradley) has picked up a really nasty injury so we're not going to see him again this season, Giovanni Leoni as well and he looks a real prospect, a real talent," he said. "Hopefully Ibrahima Konate will be back soon.
"It does feel like they are down to the bare bones, if you like. They need some players, he (Slot) needs some help in that department. If they were to pick up an injury or two more, they are going to have real problems.
"I don't know the ins and outs, but Guehi felt like a big miss. That was something where everybody in football was saying he's going to Liverpool, it looks like a done deal.
"Manchester City came in and offered him a huge amount of money to go there, and it's a really good move for him and I fully understand that one. But I felt that was one that Liverpool would have partaken in, but they didn't."
Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp added: "Now they (Liverpool) have to be clever in the market.
"The hard thing is you go and buy a player - and Leoni is going to be a real star - he is probably going to be fit for the start of next pre-season hopefully.
"So you're in a bit of position really but you have to make sure you have got some strength in depth."
