Celtics eyeing potential Anfernee Simons trade for a critical contending piece

The Celtics are reportedly exploring a trade involving Simons for a solid starting center.

The Boston Celtics are on an unforeseen emergence this 2025-26 NBA season. Despite the Achilles injury of Jayson Tatum and the offseason departures of Jrue Holiday, Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis, they defied the odds and are currently occupying the No. 2 spot of the Eastern Conference with a 28-17 record.

For these major developments, recent reports suggest that the Celtics have been active in the league's trade market. And in a potential deal, they are reportedly looking for a needed enforcer using Anfernee Simons.

As their hunt for a big man continues, Evan Sidery of Forbes revealed that Boston is exploring a trade around the 26-year-old guard.

"The Celtics are shopping Anfernee Simons’ $27.6 million expiring contract for an impact starting center," Sidery wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "Boston has inquired on Ivica Zubac, Nic Claxton, Onyeka Okongwu, and Daniel Gafford during trade season."

Simons has been important to Boston’s unexpectedly great season, but his numbers have dipped. From being Portland’s primary option, he’s played all 45 games off the bench, averaging 13.9 points, 2.5 assists, and 2.5 rebounds.

It's considerably wise for Boston to use Simons as a trade chip instead of letting him walk in the offseason. After the exits of Horford, Porzingis and Luke Kornet, the Celtics desperately need an interior presence to compete once the NBA Playoffs begin.

With less than two weeks left before the trade deadline, everyone can only wait and see if Boston can pull a huge deal for a pivotal center upgrade.
