Chelsea legend John Terry on Arsenal
Chelsea legend John Terry on Arsenal's loss against Manchester United
Chelsea legend John Terry expressed his delight at Arsenal's 3-2 defeat against Manchester United on Sunday, January 25. He said that he would celebrate their loss, as it also helped protect the Blues' longstanding record.
John Terry was part of the Chelsea squad that conceded just 15 goals in the 2004-05 Premier League season. Earlier this season, many speculated that Arsenal might equal or break that record due to their excellent defence. However, after their 3-2 defeat on Sunday, they have now conceded 17 goals in 23 Premier League games.
During the game at the Emirates, John Terry uploaded a video, saying (h/t Metro):
"The record is safe for another year. January the 25th, 2026 and the record is safe. Man United 2, Arsenal 1. Still 25 minutes to go but the record is safe for another season. So Petr Cech, Paolo Ferrera, Ricky Carvalho, William Gallas, it’s time to celebrate with a bottle or a glass of red wine.
"I’m going for the bottle for celebration tonight. But guys let me know your thoughts. Can this record of 15 goals conceded in one season ever be beaten? I’m saying no."
The Chelsea legend added:
"I have to say I was a little bit worried the way Arsenal started the season and how well they started but it’s only January and the record has already gone and it’s safe for another year. I still get frustrated today, it could have been sub 10."
Meanwhile, the Gunners have conceded the second fewest goals in Premier League history with 17 in the 1998-99 season.
Arsenal face big disappointment against Manchester United; Chelsea continue their resurgence under Liam Rosenior
The Gunners came into this gameweek with a seven-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table. The Cityzens beat Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, but Arsenal failed to match that result against Manchester United.
The hosts took the lead through Lisandro Martinez's own goal (29'), before Bryan Mbeumo equalized in the 37th minute. Patrick Dorgu gave United the lead in the 50th minute, before Mikel Merino restored parity in the 84th minute. Matheus Cunha then secured the win for Manchester United three minutes later.
The Gunners are now just four points above Manchester City in the league standings, and 13 points above fifth-placed Chelsea. The Blues beat Crystal Palace 3-1 at Selhurst Park on Sunday to make it three wins in a row across competitions.
Estevao (13'), Joao Pedro (50'), and Enzo Fernandez (64', p) scored for Liam Rosenior's side. Adam Wharton was sent off in the 73rd minute for Crystal Palace, before Chris Richards (88') scored a consolation goal for them.
