Liverpool have been linked with a move from Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.
Adam Wharton has signalled to Liverpool that he is open to a move, reports suggest.
The midfielder has been outstanding for Crystal Palace since his arrival from Blackburn Rovers two years ago. Wharton helped the Eagles win the FA Cup last season for the first time in the club’s history, while he’s won three caps for England.
The 21-year-old has been linked with several top European clubs. Manchester United are said to be admirers, while Real Madrid are also reportedly keen.
However, it has been claimed that Wharton is edging closer to completing a move to Anfield. According to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, Wharton has told Liverpool that he would be willing to join, although it is unclear whether it would be in the January transfer window or at the end of the season.
Schira posted on X: “Adam #Wharton is getting closer to #Liverpool from #CrystalPalace. The midfielder has already given his availability to join #LFC with a 5-years contract. #transfers #CPFC.”
Meanwhile, head coach Oliver Glasner has confirmed that he will leave Selhurst Park at the end of the season when his contract expires. Key striker Jean-Philippe Mateta’s deal concludes in 2027 and he seems keen to part ways, with Juventus trying to sign the France international this month.
Liverpool midfield uncertainty
Liverpool could look to bolster their midfield options in the summer transfer window. Wataru Endo has been a bit-part player since Arne Slot’s arrival as head coach and will have a year remaining on his contract. Curtis Jones is in a similar position when it comes to the length of his deal.
Meanwhile, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister’s respective contracts expire in 2028. Szoboszlai has confirmed that talks are ongoing over extending his stay.
All three likely expect bumper pay rises given they are Premier League title winners with Liverpool. Jones could feel the same. Mac Allister has been linked with Real Madrid several times, while Jones has reportedly been admired by Tottenham Hotspur in the past.
Wharton’s future addressed
Speaking on Wharton’s future last year, his agent, James Featherstone, suggested that his client’s next move will hopefully be a club in the Champions League to bolster his chances of being a regular England international.
Featherstone said on talkSPORT: “Adam hadn't made his debut for Blackburn. There were question marks about his physicality, his physical output, input or both. We sat down, like you would with a lot of young players who have got the talent or potential, and spoke about shooting for the stars... let's play for England.
“Personally, to play for England, you have to play Champions League and you have got to play in one of the top teams in the top leagues. He was at Blackburn Rovers at the time, he hadn't made a first-team start for Blackburn Rovers.
“There were a lot of options. I absolutely knew Palace was the right environment. Not just the club but the dressing room, we had players in the dressing room who understood the culture and environment. I felt it would be the perfect step for him in terms of playing Premier League football.
