Loan watch: Nwaneri’s lightning start in France

Many of our Men’s, Women’s and Academy players have been sent out on loan this season to gain experience and further action.

Earlier in the week, we wished Ethan Nwaneri well for the rest of the season, as our teenage talent moved on loan to Marseille. Ethan’s start to life in the south of France could not have gone any better, scoring 13 minutes into his debut on Saturday as they secured a crucial 3-1 win over Ligue 1 rivals Lens in the Stade Velodrome.

The young attacking midfielder played 58 minutes of the clash, which saw Marseille move to within five points of Lens in the table, and within seven points of leaders PSG.

In Portugal, Porto will look to continue their superb league run with Jakub Kiwior at the heart of the defence, when they take on Gil Vicente on Monday night. In the meantime, Jakub assisted a late equaliser for Denis Gul at Viktoria Plzen in the penultimate round of matches in the league phase of the Europa League on Thursday.

Porto sit just one place outside the top eight automatic spots to qualify for the round of 16, and face Scottish giants Rangers in their final fixture this Thursday night.

Moving across to the Bundesliga, it was derby day on Friday for Fabio Vieira and Hamburg, as they faced city rivals St Pauli and played out a goalless draw. Fabio started and featured for 88 minutes of the stalemate, which leaves Hamburg 14th, five points above their arch-enemies. Karl Hein was on the bench for Werder Bremen on Saturday, in an unlucky 1-0 defeat by Bayer Leverkusen. Bremen sit just behind Vieira’s Hamburg on goal difference.

Reiss Nelson was an unused substitute for Brentford as they were beaten 2-0 in the Premier League on Sunday by Nottingham Forest - for whom Oleksandr Zinchenko was not involved.

The survival battle developing in League Two is certainly of interest in north London, with Louie Copley continuing his productive loan spell with Crawley Town as he played 77 minutes of a vital 1-0 away win at Barrow on Saturday. This moves his side above Shrewsbury Town on goal difference, the Salop beaten 5-1 by MK Dons. However, that game locked in more experience under the belt of Ismeal Kabia, who completed another full 90.

Having seen his youth loan at Braintree Town come to an end last Wednesday, Harrison Dudziak has now returned to Arsenal.

Moving over to our Women’s loanees, Rosa Kafaji started for Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday night in a crucial 1-0 away victory at Everton in the WSL. Rosa played 67 minutes of the clash, which saw the Seagulls move up to sixth.

Just behind Brighton are Aston Villa, who were beaten 4-1 by Manchester United in Sunday’s encounter, which on a positive note, saw Jenna Nighswonger make her debut with a 19-minute substitute appearance.

Jessie Gale made a 33-minute appearance off the bench for Bristol City on Sunday in their 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town, for whom Madison Earl did not feature. Bottom side Ipswich are still battling for survival in the WSL 2, while Bristol City sit third in the hunt for promotion.

Also in the WSL 2, Nottingham Forest have kept their outside hopes of promotion alive following a 1–0 win over Sheffield United on Sunday. Our loan star Vivienne Lia entered the fray for the final 13 minutes, helping see out the victory.
