Chelsea‘shake the football world’–Astonishment and fury at transfer decision

Chelsea signed Aaron Anselmino from Boca Juniors in August 2024 and immediately sent him back on loan for a season. He returned to Stamford Bridge after the Blues terminated his loan stay in January 2025.

The centre-back made only one appearance in the second half of last season. His playing time was restricted due to injury.

In August, Chelsea sent the Argentine on loan to Borussia Dortmund so that he could play regularly and adapt to European football.

On December 22nd, Sport Witness covered claims from Germany about an undisclosed Chelsea clause being part of the loan agreement. This allows the Club World Cup winners to recall the 20-year-old in the winter market.

Earlier this month, WAZ reported the Premier League side weren’t planning to terminate the loan deal with BVB. His progress in Germany has satisfied Chelsea. There’s now been a new twist in this case.

The west London club have made a sudden decision to recall the defender in January, as Bild report.

Bild say this is an ‘unusual’ decision from Liam Rosenior’s side and it ‘shakes the football world’. The shock decision from Chelsea hasn’t gone down well in Germany.

The Blues are within their rights to activate the recall clause. However, exercising it at this stage of the window has ’caused considerable astonishment internally’ at Borussia Dortmund. Maybe BVB should have asked for an expiry date on the clause, then.

Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo are injured. This leaves Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah and Benoît Badiashile as three recognised centre-backs at Rosenior’s disposal. The injury situation has forced Chelsea to cut short the Argentine’s loan stay.

According to the report, the German club’s leaders are furious with the Chelsea bosses for recalling Anselmino. Again, they should probably try some introspection over the lack of a cut off date, or an earlier one at least.

This now puts pressure on Borussia Dortmund, but Bild claim BVB aren’t planning to sign a new centre-back in this window.

The dramatics from Germany are likely to create a scene so fans blame Chelsea rather than start asking questions about BVB not protecting themselves against a recall towards the end of January.
