Andy Robertson's anticipated transfer to Tottenham seems to have hit a snag, with the defender now likely to remain at Liverpool. Just last week, reports suggested that Spurs had initiated talks about a potential January move for the Scottish international.

Initially, they had planned to sign Robertson on a free transfer in the summer, but their interest was fast-tracked due to an escalating injury crisis.

Negotiations were reportedly going well, with Liverpool asking for a reasonable transfer fee of around £5 million ($6.8 million). It appeared that the deal was nearing completion, but recent developments suggest it may not proceed after all. The situation has been complicated by Liverpool's need to secure a replacement for Robertson until the end of the season.

The initial plan was to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma to fill the gap. However, this hasn't been possible as it would require Roma's consent and they haven't been able to secure a replacement.

Consequently, Liverpool is currently reluctant to approve Robertson's move to Tottenham. Discussions with Roma are believed to be ongoing, but time is running out to reach a resolution with just seven days left until the January window closes.

Tottenham were under the impression that a deal had been agreed in principle for the move to take place following Liverpool's Champions League match against Qarabag on Wednesday night.

However, the north London club has always known that any successful transfer would hinge on Liverpool finding a replacement for Robertson in their squad.

The defender, whose contract is due to expire in the summer, hasn't been pushing for a move and demonstrated his professionalism by playing against Bournemouth over the weekend.

After the match, Arne Slot was asked about the possibility of Robertson leaving the club. He responded: "I think I need all of my players."

He went on to say: "I thought, let's bring Robbo in at half-time to make sure Milos [Kerkez] stays available for the rest of the season, because there are a lot of games to be played with the players that are available."

When questioned directly about Liverpool's plans for the remainder of the transfer window, Slot said: "No updates in terms of transfers. I never speak in public about transfers. There's nothing to say on my side."

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank gave a similar response when asked about the potential signing of Robertson, stating: "Just on that one, in general as you don't know me that well, I don't speak about players that are not in the club, except Ronaldo and Messi."

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk later voiced his wish for Robertson to remain at Anfield, saying: "He's my vice-captain. Robbo is a very important member of our team and I want him to stay but whatever happens, let's see."
