Tottenham may launch a huge January transfer move to turn around their season - reports
The situation surrounding Tottenham Hotspur appears to be worsening by the week and Saturday’s late equaliser at Burnley will have done little to ease the pressure on Thomas Frank.
Cristian Romero earnt his side a 2-2 draw at the relegation-threatened Clarets but results elsewhere meant Spurs are now just eight points above the relegation zone, closer to the Premier League’s bottom three than the top five in terms of points for the first time this season.
Thomas Frank remains in his post as head coach for now and it is believed that the club are keen to give him as much time as possible, but things must be turned around quickly if the Dane is to have a long-term future in north London.
The January transfer window could aid Frank in his mission. Spurs have already made two signings this window, in the shape of £35million former Chelsea star Conor Gallagher and 19-year-old Brazilian left-back Souza, but more may be yet to come.
Spurs make stunning Aurelien Tchouameni offer
Reports by Fichajes in Spain state that Tottenham, along with Premier League rivals Liverpool, have made an ‘offer’ of €100m (£87m) for Real Madrid and France midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.
The audacious offer is said to have arrived at Los Blancos’ doorstep but the La Liga giants are in ‘no rush’ to sell the 25-year-old for any price in this window. The defensive midfielder by trade signed for Real for €80m (£70m) in 2022 and has won the Champions League once during his time at the Bernabeu, viewed as a key ‘pillar’ of Alvaro Arbeloa’s project at the club.
Reporting continues that Spurs hope to ‘make a competitive leap’ and view Tchouameni as someone who ‘would fit immediately into their project’.
Real Madrid are not thought to be keen to sell, though. While they are said to be considering the situation, their stance is believed to be that ‘not everything has a price’ and Tchouameni is unlikely to be for sale despite the size of the reported proposals.
Spurs must continue to show ambition to turn their season around
It makes sense that Tottenham are targeting another midfielder this month, following extended injury lay-offs to both Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall in recent matches, both of whom are not expected back for several months.
Although Spurs just signed Gallagher from Atletico Madrid earlier in this window, Yves Bissouma was handed a start alongside the Englishman at Burnley in what was his very first start under Frank, who was previously believed not to be a fan. But the Mali international is now back in the fold amidst injury issues.
While any January move for Tchouameni appears ambitious at present, it represents Spurs’ ambition in the market to move for the top players in Europe despite their disappointing league positions over the last two seasons.
The Lilywhites have also been linked with the likes of Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson and may view additional January arrivals as crucial to their season, particularly in their current situation with Frank’s job on the line and eight players out injured at present. Spurs are going strong in the Champions League and will feel that there is still the chance to save their season.
