Liverpool has confirmed that academy talent Lewis Koumas has returned to the club following his loan stint at Birmingham City.

The 20-year-old made 25 appearances for Blues and scored in the 3-2 win over Coventry City earlier this month, but the decision has been taken for him to be recalled in the final week of the January window.

Despite the ongoing injury issues at Liverpool, and lack of squad depth at first-team level, the youngster is not expected to remain at the club for the rest of the month.

Liverpool is now in the process of assessing what step is best in terms of his long-term development.

It's understood Koumas is keen to secure regular minutes as he looks to secure his place in the Wales squad ahead of a possible World Cup this summer, should Craig Bellamy's side progress through the play-offs.

Koumas has earned nine Wales caps to date and played in November's win over Liechtenstein.

Despite making 23 league appearances for Birmingham, just seven came as starts.

With Birmingham adding winger Ibrahim Osman on loan this month, and more arrivals anticipated, there is a feeling a month elsewhere is best for Koumas' development.

After a successful spell at Stoke City, and some bright spells at Birmingham, it's expected he will join another Championship club in the final week of the January window.

Koumas has been linked with a move elsewhere this month, with the Liverpool Echo reporting he could join Hull City on loan.

Koumas scored on his only senior Liverpool appearance, which came in a 3-0 FA Cup win over Southampton in February 2024.
