Liverpool have cancelled Lewis Koumas's loan spell at Birmingham City.

The 20-year-old Wales forward had hoped to kick on after spending last season on loan at Stoke City, making 49 appearances in what was a difficult campaign.

But he has only made seven league starts and was left out of the squad entirely for Saturday's draw with Stoke at St Andrew's and Liverpool have today sanctioned a recall.

His path to game time looked even more blocked as Birmingham made a January move for Brighton wide man Ibrahim Osman and try to bring in Carlos Vicente on a big money deal from Alaves.

Koumas has immediately been linked with a potential move to play-off hopefuls Hull, who are restricted to signings without a transfer or loan fee due to breaches of league rules last season.

The Liverpool Echo claim that Hull have emerged as "strong contenders" to take on the player for the rest of the season.

Hull are fourth with 50 points, Stoke are 10th with 42 and Birmingham are 13th with 39 in a congested Championship table with 17 matches to play.

Koumas said recently: “Last year I played 49 games and started a big majority of them. It's been a different start this year but whenever I get put in I’m ready to give my best.

“I really like the gaffer. He sees my attributes well. We spoke about it before I came in and I’ve been working hard in training for months and months now, just so I’m ready when I go on the pitch.”
