Xabi Alonso wants Liverpool return

Xabi Alonso’s name was always going to be intertwined with Liverpool after his Real Madrid dismissal earlier this month, in tandem with the troubling season Arne Slot and Liverpool are experiencing.

Liverpool have won just five of their last 18 Premier League matches, and there is genuine pressure on Arne Slot to turn the ship around sooner rather than later.

Despite the challenging conclusion to his Madrid experience, Alonso’s reputation remains largely intact, built on his achievements at Bayer Leverkusen, where he led the club to their first-ever Bundesliga title in 2023-24 while remaining unbeaten domestically.

The 44-year-old’s brief spell in the Spanish capital was reportedly marred by internal tensions, with several first-team players said to be dissatisfied with his management style and tactical approach. High-profile disagreements with stars including Vinicius Junior allegedly contributed to his exit

It has also been reported that the Spaniard will not take a short break from management. Now Sky Sports have dropped an interesting update, with Alan Irwin reporting that the former Liverpool midfielder would be open to a return to Anfield:

This club have very high standards indeed and the Liverpool hierarchy may very well be considering their options. Xabi Alonso’s name is constantly mentioned in these parts and sources close to him indicate he would be more than happy with a return to the club.”

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed that while no direct talks have occurred between Liverpool and the representatives of Alonso, he is shortlisted by the Anfield club.
