According to a claim in the Belgian media, Chelsea are showing interest in Genk defender Yaimar Medina.
In recent years the Premier League club have adopted a policy of signing young players and the 21-year-old is now on their agenda.
HLN.be report on Chelsea’s pursuit for Medina as they look to move in on the Ecuadorian. The youngster only arrived in Belgium last year and is racing forward with career progress.
On Sunday, Chelsea sent a scout to watch the game between Genk and Cercle Brugge, so they could get a further lowdown on the young defender. The left back played the entire 90 minutes during his side’s 1-1 draw.
The plan would be for the Stamford Bridge club to sign Medina and then send him to Strasburg to get first team experience. Due to the connections Chelsea have with the French club, this has seen multiple players have a little French experience.
During the summer, even Ben Chilwell was transferred to the Ligue 1 club after falling out of favour.
Chelsea have a transfer plan
Chelsea will struggle to be able to get a deal done for Medina in this transfer window.
Genk are insistent their player will not be sold this month and will reject offers for him. The Belgian side have struggled this season and want to consolidate their place in the Jupiler League.
Medina signed for Genk during the last January transfer window from Independiente del Valle. He’s now established as a regular in the team after struggling for games during the last campaign.
This season he’s made 23 appearances in all competition, scoring one goal. Medina is contracted to Genk until June 2029. The youngster also made his debut for Ecuador in 2024 and has gone on to pick up four caps.
Should Chelsea be blocked now then this could be one for the summer.
