‘Gonna Go To Chelsea’‘He’d Be Silly To Join Us’Fans React As Romano Says Liverpool Are“In The Race”For£56M Defender

Liverpool are “in the race” to sign Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, along with Chelsea and Bayern Munich, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Negotiations with Chelsea are believed to have stalled over Rennes’ asking price, and Romano says there could be a “big battle” for the 20-year-old’s signature ahead of the summer:

“Rennes believed that Jacquet could only leave for crazy money. At the moment, they want a record fee of 65 – 70 million euros (£56m-61m). Chelsea wanted to spend something around maybe 40 [to] 50, so there is no agreement on the fee, but also Rennes insist to keep the player now and eventually sell the player for the summer. This could be the possibility.”

“So, now there is a chance for Jeremy Jacquet, who is one of the most talented defenders in the world, to leave the club now. Not now, sorry, but to leave the club in the summer, but agree a deal now. So that’s the possibility. Chelsea are there – in the race for Jeremy Jacquet to sign him now for the summer. Liverpool are also interested – following the player. Bayern are also calling for the player. So these three clubs are involved in the race for Jeremy Jacquet to agree a deal now and do it in the summer.”

“Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern all in. Let’s see who is going to win this race. But for Jeremy Jacquet is going to be a big battle. But again, probably a deal could be done now for the summer transfer window.

Fans on X are frustrated that a move for Jacquet is not an immediate priority for the Reds, with some resigned to him joining another team:

He’s gonna go Chelsea they will pay more wages than us sadly

Yeah let’s not do anything now with 1 fit CB, let’s just “monitor” one for the summer that we won’t sign

Liverpool need to strengthen their centre-back options

After missing out on Marc Guehi to Manchester City and Ibrahima Konate seemingly no closer to signing a contract extension, reinforcing the middle of defence should be a top priority for sporting director Richard Hughes.

Top-quality centre-halves are a rarity, but it does look like the Reds will have to buy two of them, and that won’t be an easy thing to do.

Jacquet is a top talent but he’s expensive

As Romano rightly points out, the centre-back is a player with massive potential, and it is not a surprise that clubs around Europe are keeping tabs on his situation.

Even so, £56m seems a lot for someone who has only made 35 appearances in France’s top flight. It would be a massive gamble.
