Newcastle United latest news: One Magpies youngster has been linked with a surprise move to Spain.
Malaga have reportedly shown an interest in signing Newcastle United youngster Alfie Harrison.
Harrison has spent two years on Tyneside following his move from Manchester City during the 2024 January transfer window. However, he is yet to make a competitive senior appearance for the Magpies during his time at the club and has not been included in a senior matchday squad this season.
Harrison has been a regular at Under-21 level, though, having made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies’ U21’s this season. He has registered just one goal in that time, with that strike coming against Harrogate Town in a 3-1 defeat in the EFL Trophy back in November.
Newcastle United are currently searching for a new U21 lead coach following Adam Lawrence’s departure earlier this year. Lawrence lasted less than five minutes in that role on Tyneside after being appointed in August with Robbie Stockdale currently in interim charge of the group.
Harrison, meanwhile, was used as a substitute by Stockdale during their Wear-Tyne clash with Sunderland in their last outing. The Magpies and Black Cats shared the points that afternoon as Anthony Munda’s 63rd minute strike cancelled out Tom Lavery’s opener for the hosts.
Alfie Harrison linked with shock Malaga transfer
According to Sky Sports, Spanish side Malaga have shown an interest in signing Harrison this month. The former Manchester City man reportedly has just six months left on his contract at St James’ Park - although it is understood that the Magpies could trigger an extension that will keep him at the club for a further 12 months.

A switch to Malaga could see Harrison fill a gap in their squad created by Antonio Cordero’s departure in the summer. Cordero left Malaga on a free transfer to join Newcastle United in July before he was sent on-loan to Belgian side KVC Westerlo.
Cordero failed to make an impact in Belgium, though, and was recalled by his parent club from that loan spell. Cordero then returned to Spain to join Cadiz in a bid to rediscover the form that convinced the Magpies to sign him in the first place.

At Cadiz, Cordero has already made four appearances, playing just-shy of 70 minutes during their 2-1 defeat to Granada at the weekend. Cadiz currently sit four points and seven places below Malaga in the La Liga 2 table with Cordero potentially facing his former employers for the first time since leaving them at the end of March.
Cordero had previously spent a season in Cadiz’s youth ranks and after reportedly having Barcelona and Real Madrid sniffing around him last year before the Magpies swooped for his signature, will be desperate to show his worth again back in his home country.
Harrison, meanwhile, amid reports over his future on Tyneside, will be preparing for Newcastle United Under-21’s Premier League 2 game against Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-21’s on Friday night at Whitley Park. Newcastle United U21’s currently sit 24th out of 29 in the Premier League 2 table following their draw with Sunderland last time out.
